In 2020, as Director of Nursing at a 126-bed skilled nursing facility, I lost 43 people to COVID. Patients and staff. Teammates. I worked as DON by day and picked up shifts as the RN on our COVID unit by night. 31 patients with just me and one CNA. I spent over 24 hours on the clock more than once because there was no one else.

Until we couldn't anymore.

What broke me

I was always the "strong one." The one people leaned on. The one who could handle whatever crisis walked through the door.

As a Clinical Director, I wore every hat imaginable. HR, payroll, nurse, employee advocate, standing up for what's right, matrix management, KPI tracking, quality control, staffing, recruitment, IT. Just putting out fires. All day. Every day.

Which meant I was the one they blamed when things fell apart.

Staff retention issues? My fault. Never mind that we were chronically understaffed and people were burning out from impossible workloads. If it wasn't me, they'd have to look at the system. And the system was working exactly as designed.

So I got the performance improvement plan. The meetings where they told me I wasn't managing my team effectively while giving me zero resources to actually manage anything.

I sat in that meeting and felt absolutely nothing. Not anger. Not panic. Just detachment.

Because I'd already left.

Not physically, not yet. But energetically, I was done. My nervous system had made the decision my brain was still catching up to.

Then everything fell apart. Workplace retaliation. Financial devastation. The kind of breakdown that forces a choice: transform or quit.

It was being told my work wasn't good enough while simultaneously being the person everyone came to when things went wrong.

It was realizing that no amount of competence, no amount of showing up, no amount of trying harder was going to fix a structure designed to break people.

It was my body finally saying: I can't do this anymore.

Brain fog so thick I couldn't think straight. Tension that never released. Sleep that didn't restore anything. A nervous system that thought we were under threat 24/7 because we were.

And then the financial collapse. And the workplace retaliation. And the kind of breakdown that forces you to choose: transform or quit.

I chose both.

Water Taught Me What Medicine Couldn't

When everything fell apart, I ended up at Kentucky Lake. Not on purpose - I live near it. But I started noticing something.

Why I Had to Leave

I couldn't keep risking my nursing license because the workload was unsafe. Too many patients. Too many demands on one RN. Not safe. But expected anyway.

I couldn't keep watching insurance giants rule over our own bodies for profit. Denying care. Delaying treatment. Making medical decisions based on cost instead of clinical need.

And I couldn't keep doing to myself what I was watching the system do to everyone else.

So I left.
